NEWBERRY — From the very first note, Once draws you in and never let’s go. This emotionally captivating Broadway musical is the only show to have music that won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Olivier Award and a Tony Award. Now a touring Broadway show, this award-winning musical comes to the regionally renowned Newberry Opera House for two shows on Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 p.m. and at 7:00 p.m.
Based off the Oscar-winning 2007 film by the same name, this critically acclaimed Broadway musical won five Drama Desk Awards and eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Set on the streets of Dublin, Ireland, this musical is about a young Irish musician named Guy who is about to give up his career when he meets a young Czech woman named Girl. They are drawn together by their shared love for music and form a band to win back Guy’s ex in NYC. Over the course of one fateful week, an unexpected friendship and collaboration between them quickly evolves into a powerful but complicated love story. Featuring the songs from the critically-acclaimed film, including the Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly.”
Once has something of the feel of a pub concert, and every effort is made to give the audience an intimate evening with the characters. Before the show, the actors, who are also the show’s musicians, play Irish standards in the Dublin pub set, and audience members are invited to join them for a drink from the onstage bar.
