Shooter Jennings headlines the Whimmydiddle Country Music Festival in Hamilton this SaturdayPhoto: Jimmy FontaineOrganizers of the two-day Whimmydiddle Country Music Festival — taking place Friday and Saturday (Aug. 16-17) at the RiversEdge Amphitheater in Hamilton, Ohio — have assembled a fantastic lineup of acclaimed Americana artists who reside outside of the purview of today’s mainstream Country-verse. RiversEdge boasts an impressive schedule of concerts every summer, with a mix of cover/tribute acts and original local and touring artists. (Another great festival — the Big River Get Down, organized by Hamilton native and Revivalists frontperson David Shaw — returns to RiversEdge on Sept. 7.)
Headlining Friday at Whimmydiddle is the renowned Del McCoury Band, who claim to be the most awarded Bluegrass group of all time. The band’s most recent album is last year’s Del McCoury Still Sings Bluegrass.
Saturday’s headliner is Shooter Jennings, a Country music renegade who has brought the spirit of Outlaw Country (of which his father Waylon was known as a pioneer) into the 21st century, with Rock energy and flourishes and more unexpected twists. He also has a lot of fun, as shown in videos of him performing with the Rockafire Express band and parodying Hee Haw.
The rest of the Whimmydiddle includes other acclaimed contemporary artists like Billy Strings and JD McPherson, as well as Cincinnati favorites Arlo McKinley and the Lonesome Sound. See the full schedule below.
