Ensembles and two choirs will perform in McAllister.

This college’s music program will have a World Music Concert 2-3 p.m. Oct. 28 in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center.
“Music from Africa, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico and Iberia — music from all around the world will be performed,” Professor Cindy Sanchez, director of the concert, said Oct. 22.
“All the pieces being performed are very easy to listen to and compelling,” she said.
She said performances will be by the guitar, piano and bassoon ensembles and two choirs.
“Since we have so many new students this semester, the plan is to have at least two or three pieces for every ensemble, and together we can make a program that is an hour long,” Sanchez said.
The Concert Choir will perform an African piece called “Adiemus” from “Songs of Sanctuary” by Karl Jenkins.
“The words to this particular piece don’t have any meaning, but it’s meant to sound tribal,” she said.
“There is lots of drumming, so it sounds real chant-like.”
The Chamber Choir, composed of voice majors, will perform a New Zealand piece called “Kia Hora Te Marino” by Christopher Tin.
This is the third year the music department has staged this concert, Sanchez said.
“Our program here has been growing,” Sanchez said. “Student success and our productive grade rate are great, better than most schools. It’s beautiful thing what we got going on here.”
Entry is free for the concert.
Sanchez wants to students to know to turn off cell phones before the concert starts and to arrive on time before doors close.
