Musical comedy about the NRA coming to SF

Song and dance isn’t generally the first thing that comes to mind for the National Rifle Association, the organization that San Francisco voted to classify a domestic terrorist group a few months ago. But now, the musical you never knew you needed is coming to San Francisco: “More Guns! A Musical Comedy about the NRA.”

The musical from producers Philip Labes and Michael O’Konis has been selling out shows in Los Angeles since it started 18 months ago. Now, it will travel to San Francisco’s Z Space for a short run from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1, 2020.

“We’re thrilled to bring ‘More Guns!’ to San Francisco,” said Labes and O’Konis in a press release. “This ludicrous satire of gun culture goes beyond a simple satire to provide heart and nuance to a complicated issue. We hope to inspire empathy through laughter and ticket sales…”

The musical centers on Ron Barkley (Andrew Pifko), head lobbyist for the NRA, who is at odds with his liberal socialist daughter (Marnina Schon). Desperate for divine intervention in his lobbying efforts, Ron prays to God — and in return receives a magical gun that turns people into guns. Because the solution to America’s gun violence problem is… more guns.

“More Guns” pokes fun at both the NRA and woke leftists, with songs including “Semi-Automatically,” “Everybody Do The Lobby” and “Liberal Love.” You can watch a music video for “Liberal Love” on YouTube, which features lyrics such as “You didn’t hold the door for me I was immediately charmed / I was searching for a safe space and found it in your arms.”

“More Guns” will play at Z Space, 450 Florida St., San Francisco from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 ($30).
