Sony is releasing a 40th anniversary limited edition Walkman which will feature a specially designed soft case and package, inspired by Sony’s first portable cassette player.

The first Sony Walkman portable cassette player was released in 1979 and allowed people to listen to music on the move.

“For the first time, it was possible to enjoy your favourite tracks, albums and artists in high quality sound, anytime, anywhere,” Sony explained.

The original TPS-L2 Walkman ran on two AA batteries and offered users privacy as it only features a headphone jack and no speaker.

Sony is now releasing an anniversary edition of this iconic music player – the NW-A100TPS Walkman – with a 40th anniversary logo printed on the rear panel.

“Not everything was better back then, enjoy the best of both worlds with the heritage design of the Walkman whilst having cutting edge technology at your fingertips,” Sony said.

The 40th anniversary NW-A100TPS Walkman features:

Direct download and streaming via Wi-Fi.
High-resolution audio compatibility.
High-resolution audio quality music streaming thanks to LDAC, a premium wireless codec.
Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth support.
Audio upscaling through the DSEE HX processor.
Noise cancelling.
Up to 26 hours’ battery life.

The Walkman 40th anniversary package will include the NW-A100 Walkman, a special soft case styled on the iconic original Walkman and two Walkman 40th Anniversary sticker sheets.
