Any of you house music fans who fancy a trip to Ibiza – then read on.

North Tyneside artist Davey Brown has come up with an exciting competition that will have many of you pumping up the music.

Ex-painter and decorator Davey swapped big paint brushes for little ones to become an artist and is travelling the country with his exhibition.

He is a huge house music fan and his latest works features legendary DJs, iconic night spots, famous producers and the Ibiza club scene.

His show started in May in Tynemouth, then travelled around the country before the exhibition heads off to the home of house music – the party island of Ibiza.

Davey, 52, of Forest Hall, North Tyneside, said: “The exhibition is called ‘The History Of House’ and features the early US DJs such as Frankie Knuckles and Tony Humphries, the iconic clubs and parties, the legendary UK DJs and producers, the whole Ibiza scene from the beginning.”

After the exhibition launch in Tynemouth it then went to London at the very cool 26 Leake Street in Waterloo in June. Top DJ Lisa Loud played there with other DJs.

Davey said: “I then took my exhibition to Kidderminster and I’m doing Hardwick Live this weekend. The highlight of the exhibition is in Ibiza on September 5 at the beautiful Las Mimosas hotel which is owned by the Cafe Mambo group.

“They invited me to hold the exhibition there, which I am thrilled about. I have got the Ibiza legend DJ Alfredo playing there.

“The owner of Mambo, Javier Anadon, has commissioned me to do five DJ portraits which are going to be displayed in Cafe Mambo. To have the first leg sponsored by Cafe Mambo is fantastic. I’m absolutely buzzing.”

After Ibiza the exhibition will go to Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin, Hull and possibly back to London.

Davey realises there are hordes of house music fans in the region and is offering them a chance to join him in Ibiza.

He added: “The competition is now open and it is to win a VIP trip for two to the Ibiza part of my exhibition.

“The lucky winner will get return flights from either Stansted or Newcastle airport, two nights in the beautiful Sa Clau by Mambo in San Antonio, airport transfers, a goodie bag with CDs, t-shirts and a House music book, a portrait of the winner’s favourite DJ painted by Davey Brown, two guest list places for a top club and £250 spending money.

“For the winner it will be an amazing experience.”

Davey, who also paints football legends such as Alan Shearer, Jackie Milburn and Kevin Keegan, will display between 30 and 40 paintings and he’s been working flat out to get them all ready.

He has also written poems to go alongside the paintings to help tell the story of house. The poems, photos of the paintings and photos of the exhibition are being turned into a book which will be released early next year.

He added: “I have a huge passion for house music and wanted to try and put on a show rather than just stick a few paintings on a wall.

“So the idea to have DJs playing, the house music poems displayed with the paintings and in some of the venues, footage of old school raves and festivals showing on screens, was born.

“It was originally only meant to be in Tynemouth, London and Ibiza, but as word spread, I was approached to take the exhibition around the country.

“I did art at school and got an O Level in it but never really pursued it. I had always loved drawing as a child and in hindsight, I often wonder why I never wanted to do it for a living.

“I ended up a decorator and did this until a bad leg injury put paid to that career. I needed to find something to do instead. My dad brought me a watercolours set one day and urged me to get back into art, so I did.

“Painting is a passion. It’s as simple as that. I love it and feel lucky to be able to do something I love for a living. It’s not a normal 9 to 5 job and that is one of the things I love about it.

“The exhibition is going to Ibiza because it is a place that is close to my heart and also the obvious reason of it being the best place in the world for house and dance music and clubs.

“There is so much more to Ibiza though and the chance to take my exhibition there means I can spend some time going around the island.

“The venue where the exhibition will be, Las Mimosas in San Antonio Bay, is stunning. It is perfect and I can’t wait to see my artwork on show there.”
