Actor and TV presenter Mikki Osei Berko says he is disappointed that the top musical acts in Ghana sing dancehall songs and not highlife music.
Mikki made his disappointment known in an interview with Kokonsa TV, monitored by GhanaWeb.
According to Mikki, the only time he will begin to understand and appreciate why the situation is so is when he travels to Jamaica and learns that their top musicians sing highlife songs.
He bemoaned the lack of promotion for Ghanaian music and culture and blamed industry players for not supporting the music industry to thrive.
He said, “When I get to Jamaica and I’m told that their top artiste there sings highlife, then I will begin to appreciate why our situation is like that.”
Mikki Osei Berko revealed on the show that many of the songs that are claimed to be dancehall songs are in truth highlife music and he does not understand why the artistes will not identify as highlife musicians and do it well.
He blamed Ghanaians squarely for not appreciating their culture or taking time to learn about their heritage as they do with other cultures.
“I don’t blame the musicians alone, this is a national problem. The national problem being that we don’t understand our culture, we don’t even know we have a culture for us to even teach the next generation, we don’t know. We don’t know our heritage, that is one of the major problems we have in this country. We don’t have any sense of direction as a country so anything goes,” he stated.
