The director of new festive rom-com Last Christmas has revealed some secrets behind the film.

The film focuses on an aspiring singer named Kate ( Emilia Clarke ) who has recently recovered from an illness and now works in a department store under the watchful eye of her frosty manager ( Michelle Yeoh ) but is supported by her mother ( Emma Thompson ).

But her world is turned upside down when a handsome stranger (Henry Golding) walks into her life.

One element of the film that has also been promoted – and is linked to its title – is the music of late icon George Michael being used in the soundtrack.

But just how important is the late Wham! star’s music in the film?

Director Paul Feig told Mirror Online: “It’s about this woman who is kind of a mess but she wants to be a singer and her hero is George Michael.”

He added: “So, just like with all of us, we have a soundtrack to our life which we carry around – whether we are conscious of it or not – and that’s what it is for her. These songs are around her and shes interacting very heavily with some of them, while others are in the background for her complimenting what she’s doing at the time.”

But don’t think this changes the genre of the movie, however.

“It’s not a jukebox movie nor a musical,” says Feige, “but it has elements of both.”

So be prepared for some romance but also have faith in some killer tunes.

Last Christmas is released on Netflix on November 15, 2019.
