Medicine Hat’s favourite musical two-piece is hoping to bring light to acts they feel deserve a bit more attention.
Ryan Massini and Trent Roset make up the band Mohoney and the Hatters are bringing in Saskatchewan-based band Dirty and the Perks to play the Silver Buckle tonight at 9 p.m.
“We’ve met a bunch of groups over the years of touring and doing festivals – we always wanted to find a way to bring some of them here to perform,” said Massini. “We’re calling this Mahoney Presents and we’re going to try to do this a couple times every year.
“The first group we’re bringing out are our friends from Saskatoon – they’re so good.”
The two bands met during the summer of 2018 while playing the same music festival. Massini says Dirty and the Perks’ sound really stood out to the Hat two-piece.
“They blew us away – they were really the standouts of the festival,” he said. “The band is three siblings and one other person and they’ve all recommitted their lives to music.
“They’re a really unique sound and we’re excited to bring them out.”
Massini says Dirty and the Perks play a “folk sound with an edge.”
“They sound a bit like early Mumford and Sons,” he said. “They have one guy who plays banjo just about full time and their singer does percussion.
“It’s just a really nice sound.”
There is no charge to get into the show and Massini says the men are going to try to host a few bands in the Hat every year.
“We want to put the spotlight on smaller bands – we want to give them the stage for the night,” he said. “Every now and again we’ll give up one of our nights to a band coming through.
“We know how hard is it for touring bands to get booked so we’re hoping to help them out.”
