Musician Parker helping Glanmire find their beat as new season gets under way

Glanmire plan to find their rhythm in the Women’s Super League with the addition of new point guard and rapper Shrita Parker as their campaign begins this evening against Maree.
The American, who hopes to improve on the Cork club’s mid-table finish last season, writes and records her own music in her spare time before publishing her work online.
“In Music? I’m actually an old-school person. I listen to ‘The Temptations’. That’s my type of music. I can groove to that. Kids these days don’t know what they’re missing out on,” the 23-year-old beams.
“(When in college) I was so busy with basketball. I didn’t really do all that much. When I go home now, I go to the studio in the neighbourhood.”
The communications graduate, who finished at the University of North Carolina Wilmington in May, also dreams of treading the boards of the theatre as well as the hard court.
“I rap a little bit but I really want to be an actress,” she smiles. “Comedy, action, I can do it all. Scary. I’ll be scared but for real though. In high school, I did (drama) and I had so much fun. It’s fun, it’s my personality.”
Glanmire will hope to put that creative flair and versatility – which transfers well to the court – to good use in this evening’s opener at Galway’s Calasanctius College (tip-off at 5.0).
She faces a newly-promoted Maree side who are this season without Dayna Finn – Mayo ladies footballer and daughter of former green and red player John – but have since added their own American in Carly McClendon.
Parker’s first impressions of the Irish game were reassuringly familiar following her first training session with team-mates.
“Honestly, it’s kind of the same. The only thing is I could barely understand what’s really going on because of the language,” says the Virginian. “I heard that it’s more physical here but there’s games in America that are physical as well so I’m just excited to play.”
Elsewhere, last year’s league and Cup champions Liffey Celtic begin their bid for more glory against last season’s runners-up DCU Mercy in Leixlip.
