Hyannis, MA – Students from Sturgis Public Charter School’s East and West campuses will perform Legally Blonde, The Musical at the Tilden Arts Center at Cape Cod Community College. Every fall both campuses come together for a joint production which this year includes 90 students including cast, crew and pit orchestra. The music for the production will be performed by a student and faculty pit orchestra.

Based on the award-winning Broadway musical and the smash hit motion picture, Legally Blonde, The Musical is a fabulously fun journey of self-empowerment and expanding horizons. Legally Blonde follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. When Elle’s boyfriend, Warner, dumps her and heads to Harvard, claiming she’s not “serious” enough, Elle takes matters into her own hands, crafting a showy song-and-dance personal essay and charming her way into law school. Befriending classmate, Emmett, and spunky hairdresser, Paulette, along the way, Elle finds that books and looks aren’t mutually exclusive.  As Elle begins outsmarting her peers, she realizes that law may be her natural calling after all.

The show’s instantly recognizable songs are filled with humor, wit and sass — leaving cast members and audiences alike seeing pink! Legally Blonde. features large, energetic dance numbers with an expandable cast of sorority sisters, law school students, hairdressers and more.

Diana Young (theater teacher at East) is directing the production. In addition, Anna Botsford (theater teacher at West) is the producer; Rosemarie Gentile, (music teacher at West) is the music director; Meg Morris (human resource coordinator for both campuses) and Diana Young are the choreographers, and Natalie Sheeler (music teacher at East) is the orchestral director.

Sturgis’ arts programs include a wide variety of offerings. In addition to theatre, students can take chorus, music and art during freshman and sophomore year. Theatre, music and art are also offered as high level international baccalaureate classes junior and senior year. Every fall the East and West campuses hold a joint fall performance through STAGE (Sturgis Theatre Arts Guild of Entertainers), which is an extra-curricular theatre program that produces quality, student-driven productions in a wide variety, such as musicals, Shakespearean classics, and contemporary plays. In addition, the campuses will each perform their own winter one-act plays and will compete against each other in the METG festival.

“The fall production is always so exciting because it involves the East and West students coming together, and with this production the program has gotten even larger, with over 90 students involved in cast, crew, and pit orchestra.  The students are working so hard, taking on a lot of responsibility, and having a lot of fun putting this musical together.  We can’t wait to show it to an audience!” said Mrs. Young.

“I am so proud of the technical team of this production. An amazing group of over 30 student designers and crew members are bringing the set and costumes to life, as well as the lighting and sound elements to round out this hilarious and visually stunning musical,” said Mrs. Botsford.
